# Do You Need a Wedding Rehearsal? A Practical Guide

TOC

A wedding rehearsal is not compulsory, but it can be very useful. Its purpose is not to perform the ceremony perfectly the night before; it is to remove uncertainty so everyone knows where to go, what to hold and when to pause.

## When a rehearsal is worth it

Consider one if you have a large wedding party, children with roles, several entrances, live musicians, cultural rituals, a complex venue or people who are especially nervous about being in front of a crowd. A rehearsal can also help when family members are travelling in and have not seen the location.

## What to practise

- Where each person enters and stands.
- How the couple, witnesses and celebrant move into the signing.
- Who holds rings, readings or microphones.
- How music cues work and how long the walk takes.
- What happens if weather moves the ceremony to the backup location.

## What not to over-rehearse

You do not need to recite personal vows word for word in front of everyone. You do not need to stage every expression or photograph. Keep the rehearsal to the movements and practical cues. The real ceremony should still feel alive.

## A short briefing can be enough

For a small, simple ceremony, a ten-minute meeting or a clear run sheet may be all you need. Your celebrant can talk the witnesses through their role, confirm the legal sequence and make sure the signing table works. Ask them what they recommend for your particular plan rather than assuming every wedding needs the same level of rehearsal.

The aim is confidence, not choreography. A useful rehearsal leaves everyone clearer and the couple less responsible for managing the room.
